Viera Heart & Vascular Clinic FAQ

Have a question related to varicose veins? We have the answer. Check out these FAQs and give us a call today for more information!
  • What are varicose veins?

They are twisted veins, enlarged with blood caused by weakened vein walls and valves. Normally they are superficial and cosmetic but can cause aching and discomfort. They can be hereditary, but wearing compression stockings and exercise can reduce the risk.

  • How are varicose veins treated?

The team at Viera Heart and Vascular Clinic offers a wide variety of treatments including:

    • Sclerotherapy
    • Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy
    • Endovenous laser treatment
    • VenaSeal

Varicose vein treatments are usually minimally invasive and performed in the office. You can return to normal activities the same day and wear a compression stocking for a few days.

  • Are compressions stockings actually an effective treatment?

Compression stockings can be a highly effective treatment for patients with varicose veins or another chronic venous insufficiency. By applying direct pressure to the afflicted veins, these garments stimulate blood flow in them, reducing inflammation and preventing blood from accumulating. Nevertheless, compression stockings should be worn to complement a treatment plan, and you should always ask one of our providers about which type of stocking is right for you. After vein treatment procedures you will need to wear compression therapy for a period of time of around 72 hours.

  • What will happen if I do not treat my varicose veins?

When left untreated, varicose veins can result in sores, skin ulcers, blood clots, and even deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It’s best to treat varicose veins as soon as possible to avoid these costly and, in the case of DVT, potentially life-threatening complications.

As unpleasant as they can be, varicose veins can be easily treated. If you have further questions about them or are currently looking for treatment, contact us today and schedule an appointment.
